History of Friends of JCA, Inc.

A Journey of Inspiration and Discovery

In the summer of 2022, Josephine Clark (for whom Josephine Clark Academy is named) took her first trip to Liberia to visit JCA which was founded by Rose Kingston. Kingston, a native of Liberia, attended Long Island University (Brooklyn
Campus) where she met Professor Clark and took English courses with her. The two formed a special bond which provided inspiration for JCA. Upon arrival in Liberia, Professor Clark was treated to a fabulous performance by the students who were thrilled to meet the person whose name is on their building. Their performance was filled with love and enthusiasm! Click here for Video

During her visit to Liberia, Professor Clark gave the commencement address at the graduation ceremony for the classes of 2021 and 2022 and interacted with JCA faculty, staff, students, and members of the wider community. Accompanied by her daughter and fellow educator, Nancy Clark, Professor Clark also toured the city of Brewerville and surrounding areas in Liberia and got a sense of the overwhelming need for financial and educational resources at the school and in nearby villages.

How our foundation got started

After they returned to the United States, mother and daughter reflected on their once-in-a lifetime trip to Liberia to all who would listen. Upon hearing about the ongoing needs at JCA and the students’ passion and commitment to education, an anonymous donor made a significant contribution which made it possible to establish Friends of JCA, Inc. in 2023. As per the donor’s wishes, this foundation will provide financial support and professional development to students and faculty at JCA. Annual fundraising events and individual contributions will sustain the foundation for years to come.
